A GEISHA THAT FITS OUR VALUES
We prioritise long-term buying relationships with producers who are growing for the future – their future, and Earth’s future. So in Colombia, the vast majority of what we purchase is non-sprayed and high-yielding caturra, rather than exotic and potentially risky varietals like gesha. We have seen farmers plant gesha with disastrous results. If the delicate seedlings take, they are often hard to maintain without high levels of inputs and then in the cup they fall very, very flat. There is also an economic imperative to support producers to grow what works best for them. We have observed roasters paying commodity prices for 90% of their coffee and exorbitant prices for coffees that cup superlatively, regardless of the social and environmental system at origin. The inflated prices paid to large producers for ’superlative’ coffee distorts the market and concentrates wealth in a way that reflects the world’s problematic economy in a broader sense. Our values inform every purchase we make. Not every gesha fits so cleanly into our values system, but we’re thrilled to support Raquel and offer out her stunning coffee.
