It was a great delight to meet Gugu back in December 2024, and also April 2024. Both times we were treated to his enormous smile, his enthusiasm for his work, and, last but not least, the bananas he cultivates (he’s kinda famous for them, as well as the quality of his avocados, and of course, his coffee). Delicious!

Gugu inherited a piece of land from his father back in 1989, and has since grown this to 14 hectares with his additional purchases. For sustainability and quality focussed coffee buyers like us, Gugu is the dream. His coffee is grown in a diverse environment, with several species of shade trees as well as smaller leguminous trees to fix nitrogen in the soil. We saw monkeys, huge bird life … it’s a place coffee feels very at home.

    Processing:

Only the ripest cherries are chosen by Gugu and his dedicated team, with blemished, overripe or underdeveloped fruit removed in stages, leaving only impeccably ripe beans make their way through the sun-drying process. Gugu dries in a thin layer on many drying  to prevent overcrowding and unwanted fermentation. Gugu rotates the beans especially frequently during the initial 4 to 5-day drying period during which period it’s important for the cherries to shed a significant amount of moisture. The overall duration of the drying process is 18 to 21 days, of course depending on the prevailing weather conditions. meticulous lot separation takes place, preserving the unique identity of specific farm plots
